Stakeholders in the leather industry have said the industry has the potential to create over one million jobs, as well as being the second earner of foreign exchange for the country after crude oil.
The stakeholders stated this recently at the second edition of the Lagos Leather Fair, with the theme, “The new possible.”
In a statement, the founder of the fair
and Chief Executive of FemiHandbags, Mrs. Femi Olayebi, said if explored
very well, the industry could solve the problem of unemployment,
especially among youths.
Supported by the Lagos State Government,
Bank of Industry and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, the fair
promoted Made-in-Nigeria leather goods and provided training for
artisans by featuring over 50 leather exhibitors, as well as scheduling
master classes and workshops.
According to the organisers, the fair
among other things taught artisans the various potential of leather, the
art of shoemaking and creating brand influence in a competitive world.
“After fully evaluating the contribution
of the leather industry to the economy, it was concluded that the
government will make favourable policies to further enable the growth of
the industry,” the statement said.
“The Lagos Leather Fair yet again proves
to be a profound event that has moved from changing the narrative of
the leather industry to highlighting and exploring its numerous
possibilities.”
